Benjamin Jacob Grimm, also known as The Thing, is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a founding member of the Fantastic Four. Thing was created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, and he first appeared in The Fantastic Four #1 (cover-dated Nov. 1961).
The character is known for his trademark rocky appearance. He possesses the ability to perform superhuman feats of strength and had a sense of humor and a famous battle cry, "It's clobberin' time!" Thing's speech patterns are loosely based on those of Jimmy Durante.
In relation to the Hulk[]
- These two characters are put together in fights because the two can be compared, they are two humans altered in an accident who have become big and strong, and basically just wear a pair of pants.
- The Thing makes an appearance in the 1990s' Incredible Hulk episode "Fantastic Fortitude", with Chuck McCann reprising the Thing. The episode seems to place this show in the same continuity with the Fantastic Four cartoon of the same decade as this episode plays off the Hulk's appearance in the other show. The She-Hulk flirts with him, but Ben chooses to rekindle his relationship with Alicia Masters. The Thing also fell for the pranks of the Yancy Street Gang as well.
- In Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes, Thing and Hulk fight in an episode where Bruce goes to ask Mr Fantastic for help. Fear makes him become the Hulk and he fights the team. Benjamin Grimm compares helping Bruce to two monsters helping each other, Bruce Banner says he shouldn't compare himself to the Hulk just because of some similarities, because he's a hero and an example to others. And the Hulk is a savage monster that destroys everything in front of him.
- In Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., the character appears in the episode "Monsters No More", where the Fantastic Four were absent and as the only member present in the story decided to help the Hulk on his journey into the negative zone.
- The Thing appears in the Avengers Assemble episode "Hulk's Day Out", voiced again by Dave Boat. It is revealed that the Thing and Hulk go bowling at a bowling alley on Yancy Street.
